And now for some nerdy Warhammer 40K

Ok, so i'm the only person in the group who does it, but I thought I would share with you the wonders of Warhammer 40K, and in particular, conversions.
A conversion is when someone takes the original model kit, and then modifies it by adding or removing parts and tweaking the design of the model.

Here we see a Tau XV88 Broadside Battlesuit(Basically a big mobile gun turret with an alien sitting inside).
- The one on the top is the generic one straight from the box, and the one on the bottom is the conversion.

pretty cool. can you take parts from other models and add them to it?

and if you can, how the hell do they work out its stats :/

Well you could, most of the way they make them is that the kits are consistant throughout the range of models available for that race, so you can customize ... within the rules ... to work out the stats you just look at the profile for the model itself, the weapons have their own weapon profiles for shooting ... some wargear have different effects, but you just modify the models basic profile accordingly.

But of course, you can't go giving a Hammerhead Railgun(Massive cannon) to a Fire Warrior(General Infantry) ... there's limitations based on the options available to the troops/vehicles.

And you obviously can't put weapons and parts from other races onto your model ... (I.E - Can't give a Fire Warrior(Tau) a Boltgun(Space marines))

This was a very long explination ... this is a very complex hobby lol
